Difference Between Ratio and Proportion

Fractions, Ratios and proportions are quantities used for comparing different quantities having same units. Now Let us Understand one by one

Fraction:

It describes a part of a whole and its denominator represents the total number of parts.

For Example:

1. To represent two parts out of 11 parts the fraction will be written as fraction

frac{2}{11}

2. Ram has 5 books and Shyam has 7 books then share of Ram's books can be represented as

Total Books = No of Ram's books + No. of Shyam's Books = 5 + 7 = 12

Fraction Representing  Ram's Share will be

 No. of Ram's Books  : No. of Shyam's Books

   5 : 7

Proportion:

If two ratios are equal, then they are said to be in proportion.

Symbol “::” or “=” is used to equate the two ratios.
